When it comes to breakfast, we know the basics of what we should and shouldn’t eat. Still, there are some surprising foods that may upset your stomach first thing in the morning.

Unlike other meals, we almost always eat breakfast on a completely empty stomach. Because our stomachs are empty, they’re more sensitive when it comes to the foods we put in them. Eating isn’t wrong of course, but what we’re trying to point out is the kind of food that you eat whenever you have less time to properly eat food for breakfast.

Early in the morning, it’s easy to reach for the closest food and eat it quickly before running out of the house for work or errands.

Most of us know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day; it jump-starts our metabolism and gets our energy up so we can go about our daily business.

Unfortunately, some mornings, you might not even have time to grab breakfast at all.

Many opt for a piece of fruit, a protein bar or a smoothie compared to a cup of coffee and a pastry in belief that they are making healthier choices.

However, not many are aware that some foods interact with each other and our bodies in different ways. Certain foods offer great benefits by themselves while other do not.

DON’T- Yogurt

What’s inside yogurt? It has live microorganisms which are actually your normal flora or the kind that will help your normal flora.

It’s not that eating yogurt on an empty stomach is bad for you, it just doesn’t give you all the benefits it can provide if you’ve already eaten something.

Your stomach acids alone cannot digest and absorbs all the nutrients you plan to intake. So your normal intestinal bacteria does the work in breaking down these particles.

Eating yogurt would render the bacteria on it as useless. Without any other food to help in digestion, your stomach acid will kill them anyway.

The lactic acid bacteria found in yogurt (which is good for you) gets killed by your stomach’s hydrochloric acid if you haven’t eaten anything else.

DON’T- Bananas

This might surprise a lot of people, but bananas are not necessarily the best thing to eat first thing in the morning.

This fruit is a very healthy one that can even make your stomach full and relieve constipation.

However, there is a proper time to eat bananas and that is after having a meal and not before it. Eating bananas on an empty stomach will cause your body to absorb too much magnesium and potassium in your blood, causing imbalance.

Since it is not accompanied by other nutrients, your protein carriers can only utilize magnesium and make your stomach acidic.

And according to Brightside, bananas can cause a sharp increase in the amount of magnesium in your bloodstream, which can potentially harm your heart.

DON’T- Citrus Fruits

Many people love eating oranges or grapefruits or drink lemon first thing in the morning, but they could actually cause problems.

Citrus fruits are rich in fruit acids. When eaten on an empty stomach, they can cause heartburn and also increase the risk of gastritis and even gastric ulcers.

The Hearty Soul explains that citrus fruits can irritate your lower esophagus, especially if you eat them on an empty stomach.

DON’T- Tomatoes

Aside from being filled with huge amount of Vitamin C, tomatoes also has high levels of tannic acid.
Consumption of tomatoes in an empty stomach will only make the acid in your stomach go crazy because the tannic acid of tomatoes will disturb the acid in your stomach. When this happens, the level of acidity in your stomack while rise, thus leading to gastric problem or gastric ulcer.
Especially when you’re experiencing acid reflux lately, you should avoid eating tomatoes with an empty stomach.

DON’T- Sweets

Some people tend to eat candy, chocolate and other sweets when their hungry and no other food is available at the moment. This is being practiced by many people yet they don’t know that doing so is actually bad for the health.Sugar of the blood or glucose is the primary substance that can overload your pancreas and make it produce too much insulin.
After resting or a good sleep, your organs have just been in work again so do not surprise them with a huge dose of sweets.

DON’T- Short crusts and Pastries

Continental breakfast may be very appealing to the eye but you should resist and try your best to avoid them. Be it danish or croissants, the yeast in the bread can still potentially irritate your stomach lining.The irritation of the stomach lining can result to the release of toxic gases of the body or flatulence.
Moreover, by consuming the yeast in crusts and pastries, you are complicating the acid production of your body so it’s just better to avoid having such food first thing in the morning.

DON’T- Sodas and Carbonated Drinks

These drinks, when consumed in an empty stomach, can badly damage your stomach lining and prevent a good blood flow of oxygen.
Also, carbonated drinks such as soft drinks is very acidic. Drinking them without eating anything will increase acidity in your stomach which is a bad thing because it can also cause ulcer.
If this is always practiced, then don’t be surprised if you develop a stomach cancer.

DON’T- Alcohol

There are people who drink alcohol first thing in the morning. They even include alcohol in cooking food. Alcohol isn’t so great since your organs will have a hard time converting the alcohol into something useful.
Consuming alcohol in an empty stomach will make it flow directly to your blood stream. Because of that, the blood vessels throughout your body will widen and will lead to a temporary feeling of warmth.
This is very dangerous because as we all know, blood circulates all throughout our body. And that includes our organs like lungs and our brain.

DON’T- Cucumbers and other green vegetables

Raw vegetables are rich sources of amino acids. However, they can cause heartburn, flatulence, and abdominal pain, especially when consumed on an empty stomach.

DON’T- Spices

Spicy foods can cause damage and irritation to the gastric mucosa and increase acid production in your stomach. This contributes to many common disorders of the digestive system.

DON’T- Milk Products

Drinking milk or any other product of milk on an empty stomach can kill the lactic acid  bacteria.

DON’T- Sweet Potatoes

The ‘culprits’ that lead to heartburn and other kinds of discomfort are tannin and pectin acid. They make the stomach wall secrete gastric acid.

DON’T- Coffee

There are millions and millions who cannot begin their day without the performance enhancing drink as they say – coffee. There are some who skip breakfast but will have coffee. In the office, coffee is mainly drunk to suppress the appetite and there is shortage of snacks.

The content, caffeine can bring negative consequences on your health. You could have made the drink a habit, but kindly check after consumption if you are suffering from stress or anxiety. This is due to the suppression of serotonin, the healthy neurotransmitter that is the main reason for pleasure, positivity etc.

Persons with gastritis should never drink coffee on an empty stomach. Agree, the chlorogenic acid is great for health and can prevent diseases such as colon cancer, they are not safe on an empty stomach.

In case of ‘black gold’ as the term for black coffee, when the drink goes into the stomach, it triggers the formation of hydrochloric acid causing gastritis.  Simple common sense, hydrochloric acid can be used for breaking the proteins and other substances in the food, but on an empty stomach, it can corrode the intestinal lining. The other symptoms could be irritable bowels and bloating and in the future, colon carcinoma.

Coffee, as you know, is a stimulant. The drink makes your body produce more adrenaline hormone, known as cortisol in the blood stream.  When the hormone is released, so does the blood pressure and heart rate and the liver is forced to release energy to muscles. This will make you crave for sugar, you will face clarity in thinking etc.

DON’T- Tea

Similar to coffee, tea is alkaline in nature and can trigger the secretion of gastric acid when taken first in the morning. The culprit is caffeine and it can lead to dehydration and can stimulate the release of gastric acid.

Green tea taken during meal time can restrict the absorption of vitamin B1 or thiamin. Other problems could be removal of calcium in the body can give rise to osteoporosis. If you have an acid reflux problem it can lead to more worse situations.

DON’T- Tablets

Medicines are used to cure, prevent, or reduce the symptoms of a disease, injury or ailment by modifying some chemical reactions in the body. They are found in various forms such as tablets, powders, capsules etc.

Every medicine when administered to a patient by the doctor will have clear instructions. There are some such as erythromycin which when taken on an empty tummy can cause stomach upsets.

Kindly note, there are some which have to be taken on an empty stomach.  This is because that the food in the stomach will react with the medicine reducing its effectiveness.

DON’T- Pears

Just like other fruits, pear is very rich in nutrients such as carbohydrates, fats, protein, and fiber. So probably, you’re thinking that there isn’t anything wrong if you eat this fruit first thing in the morning. But that’s where you’re wrong.
In an empty stomach, eating pears is not a very good idea. That is because your stomach isn’t strong enough to handle the crude fiber found in pears that can injure delicate mucous membranes of an empty stomach.
The stomach depends on mucous membrane to breakdown and digest food so you won’t damage it.

Eggs
